Puppies!

Okay, so this isn't Thor digging but it makes my point. Thor is a digger. I know most dogs that dig do it because they are bored or frustrated. This doesn't seem to be the case for Thor. He likes the smell of something in the middle of our yard. He smells and smells and then stops. He smells again and at just the right spot he will dig. Of course if he's already started to dig he will dig in the same spot. If we let this behavior continue he will be to China by the weekend. So far positive reinforcement has worked with Thor but I'm not sure how to handle the digging issue. Mojo never dug in our yard so this is new terrirory for us. The funny thing is how fast he is about it too. He looks like he's trying to find a spot to do his business, so the whole time I'm like go to your spot (he digs outside the potty area) and he keeps sniffing and then with a blink of an eye he's digging a hole. If I could just find a way to get him to dig up only weeds, I'd have no problem with this behavior. Puppies - you have to love them because they are so darn cute.

Okay, are you ready for the remedy? This works probably 98% of the time. If you scoop the poop from Mojo and Thor and put it in the hole that Thor is digging he will stop. It puts them off. They won't dig up their own poop. You can fill in the hole first and then put the poop on top if you want. It's a good idea to catch him early and then put poop where he is just starting to dig. Then get his attention and do something else like fetch or tug or something. Let me know how this goes for you.

Oh my gosh Vicki, I about fell out of my chair laughing. I would say he likes to dig... Oh my!!! On the beach I wouldn't be so concerned. But at home, if he continues to go to one spot I do have a suggestion. My black female was a horrible digger and would always go to the same area. Someone told me to bury her poop in the hole and she wouldn't dig there any more. Believe it or not, it worked. Not sure if it will work for Thor or not, this picture shows he is pretty motivated, LOL but worth a try. I would also always interrupt him and make sure to let him know he is doing wrong. Susan may have some other suggestions as well. You have to post this pic on our tier haven site on facebook, absolutely adorable that little mali puppy butt in the air like that. :)

I'm glad you got a laugh out of it but as stated in my blog, it's not Thor. It was a picture I found to make my point but thankfully it got me a positive solution. Mindy - Mojo's foster mom said to fill the hole with Thor's poop. Glamorous it's not but she asures me it will work. I plan to try filling the hole in our yard today. I'll let you know if it works.
